General Eligibility

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements established for the scholarship for which they are applying.

The program is designed primarily for undergraduate, graduate, professional, and medical students pursuing education or career pathways relevant to medicine, healthcare, public health, mental health, medical education, healthcare research, healthcare leadership, or related fields.

Sharp Index welcomes applicants at different stages of their education.

Applicants do not need to be medical students or published researchers unless a specific scholarship opportunity states otherwise.

Applicants should demonstrate a meaningful connection to the purpose of the scholarship through their education, research, advocacy, community involvement, service, lived experience, career goals, or other relevant work.

Current Sharp Index directors, officers, employees, and their immediate family or household members are not eligible to receive an award.

Additional eligibility requirements may apply to individual scholarship opportunities.

Selection

Applications are considered based on factors including mission alignment, educational and career goals, potential contribution to healthcare, relevant research or experience, and the potential impact of scholarship support.

Applicants are evaluated in the context of the opportunities and resources available to them.

Academic achievement may provide useful context but institutional prestige, GPA, publication count, or access to high-profile professional opportunities should not independently determine selection.

Final scholarship recipients are selected by the Sharp Index Board.

Sharp Index Health Equity Scholarship

The Sharp Index Health Equity Scholarship is a $5,000 flexible-use educational grant supporting eligible students from historically underrepresented or underserved populations and identities whose education, research, advocacy, or future careers can contribute to healthcare mental health, workforce well-being, and health equity.

Priority consideration is given to applicants from populations or identities historically underrepresented, underserved, or facing structural barriers in medicine and healthcare.

An applicant's relevant perspective may arise from socioeconomic circumstances, disability, race or ethnicity, gender or gender identity, LGBTQ+ identity, rural background, first-generation college or professional-school experience, or other experiences relevant to representation, opportunity, and equity in healthcare.

Eligibility and selection are individualized. Applicants are not required to disclose trauma, discrimination, a mental health diagnosis, or other sensitive personal experiences.

What Health Equity Scholars Receive

Each selected Health Equity Scholar receives:

$5,000 flexible-use educational grant

and

Up to 10 hours of individualized professional and educational support.

Professional support may include mentorship, career guidance, research or writing feedback, professional introductions, networking, communications assistance, or educational video development.

The support hours are optional resources available to scholars. Scholars are not required to use all 10 hours.

Application Materials

Applicants may be asked to provide:

  • Contact and educational information

  • Current institution and program

  • Anticipated graduation date

  • Résumé or CV

  • Educational and career goals

  • Short statement describing alignment with the Sharp Index mission

  • Relevant research, advocacy, service, community involvement, or experience

  • Information about financial or structural barriers, when relevant

  • Information about how scholarship support could advance their education or professional pathway

Health Equity Scholarship applicants will also propose a potential knowledge-sharing topic and format.

Applicants with existing research may provide a citation, abstract, DOI, publication link, or short project description.

Recommendation letters are not required for the initial application unless otherwise stated.

Sharp Index does not require applicants to submit tax returns, medical records, evidence of trauma, or other unnecessary sensitive documentation as part of the standard application.

Health Equity Scholar Knowledge-Sharing Program

Sharp Index believes students' research, ideas, and perspectives can contribute to healthier healthcare.

Each Health Equity Scholar completes one knowledge-sharing contribution, with a target completion date of July 31, 2027.

Scholars choose one of three formats.

Opinion or Perspective Article

Submit an original article addressing healthcare workforce mental health, clinician well-being, burnout, suicide prevention, medical education, health equity, or another topic relevant to healthier and more equitable healthcare.

Written contributions will generally be approximately 500–1,500 words.

Research Contribution

Provide an accessible original summary of research the scholar has conducted or contributed to.

Previously published research may be shared through a citation or publication link accompanied by an original explanation of the findings and their potential relevance.

Research does not need to focus exclusively on healthcare workers. Broader health equity research may qualify when it has meaningful implications for medicine, healthcare organizations, healthcare education, the healthcare workforce, or the communities they serve.

Educational Video

Create a short educational video communicating research, evidence-informed ideas, or perspectives related to healthcare mental health, workforce well-being, health equity, medical education, or healthier healthcare environments.

Professional video equipment or prior media experience is not required. Educational value and substance matter more than production quality.

Publication

Submission of an eligible contribution completes the scholar's knowledge-sharing commitment.

Publication or distribution through Sharp Index is not guaranteed and remains subject to editorial review.

Recipients retain ownership of their original work. Appropriate permissions will be obtained before Sharp Index publishes or promotes scholar work.

Use of Health Equity Scholarship Funds

Applicants or scholars may contact Sharp Index to discuss an accommodation.

Scholarship reviewers are expected to protect applicant confidentiality and use application information only for authorized scholarship review.
