Themes of 2022 Nominees

Workforce and Workplace Experiences: Among this year’s nominees, the healthcare workforce crisis is seen through the eyes of the workers themselves.  The New York State Nurses Association was nominated for Nurse Leadership after organizing a 2023 strike of 7,000 nurses to improve patient care and equity, strengthen staffing and patient care ratios, and improve workplace conditions for mental health.  Will Patterson, CEO of CareRev, worked a trauma RN in San Francisco before founding a labor marketplace application to link facilities in need of staff with healthcare professionals. The health of our healthcare workforce is the concern of every patient, as leaders call for safe staffing and patient care.

Peer and Community Support:

Dr. Devika Bhushan, MD, FAAP has been nominated for the Physician Well-being Leader category.  In fall 2022, she wrote an LA Times Op-Ed to discuss her bipolar disorder as a pediatrician and public health practitioner. She now operates a newsletter and community to destigmatize mental illness. Dr. Carol Bernstein was nominated to the Lasting Legacy category for her decades-long commitment to improving physician mental health and resilience through authorship and a call-in show on Sirius Radio’s Doctor Radio Channel. Dr. Richard Ferguson was nominated to the Health Equity Leader category after founding Black Physicians of Utah. Their organization will launch more support for Black men’s mental health in February 2023.

Many of 2022’s nominees are banding together from various places in the healthcare ecosystem. Everyone has a stake in the health of our healers.

Sharp Index Awards

The Sharp Index Awards began in 2019 as a way of recognizing significant contributions to ameliorating the nationwide epidemic of physician burnout. Surveys have shown that nearly half of physicians experience burnout, leading to sometimes devastating outcomes for those providers, their practices, patients, and families. The Sharp Index Awards have a panel of over 100 judges who are decision makers in healthcare, physicians, patients, and experts. Finalists and winners are featured as leaders in healthcare mental health.

Founded in 2018, the Sharp Index is a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to reducing physician burnout and suicide and improving physician mental health and as a volunteer-based organization. It provides direct support through scholarships, partners with technology companies and healthcare leaders to create tools to transform healthcare systems and amplifies the voices of industry leaders. The Sharp Index communicates with mental health and burnout advocates in a video interview series on YouTube called Sharp Conversations as well as on its primary channel to hear stories about their experiences with mental health, burnout, and suicide in healthcare, as well as partnering with organizations and events.
