Healing in Healthcare: 2023 Scholarship Applications Open

Dear Friends,

I recently met a woman in healthcare who told me she never considered medical school, because it was not realistic from the financial background she came from. That same day, I asked a physician what we should instruct students who were considering medical school. What was the barrier? He mentioned that we should teach them how to manage their money, and that financial literacy is a huge barrier for students with fewer resources. Applying to medical school alone often costs thousands of dollars.

We want to thank our donors, including Carecognitics, Nuance, Justin Bullock, MD, winner of the 2022 Healthcare Heroes award from WebMD, and our earliest supporter of this scholarship, Heather Staples Lavoie.

With your support, we were able to give scholarships to over 10 students. We will be sharing more about their journey in the coming years as they continue their medical school journey.

Scholarship applications are open for this year. They will be awarded in January of 2024. We do more than just award financial support because money is not the only barrier to becoming a physician. We invite you to share the important work. The theme this year is “healing in healthcare.” Outcomes are not equal for all patients, and physicians should lead the charge in providing the best care. Healthcare does not always feel like a place to heal, and burnout rates demonstrate an industry that risks losing nurses, physicians, and patient lives. We invite people to share stories of healing, their hopes for the future, and how healers survive within healthcare.

Due to generous donations from our partners, supporters, and volunteers, the operating costs for the 2023 are covered and awards will go directly to students. We invite each of you to share the application with students you know, donate, and share your support of healthcare and healers with your network. There are many people dedicated to healing, and healthcare can be the healthiest place to work.  We invite you to share the scholarship application with people you know, and donate to the 2023 fund.
